Excelsior Springs was founded in 1880 around a group of natural springs on
the eastern edge of what is now Clay County, Missouri. The historic Elms
Hotel and spa is a nationally recognized attraction for visitors. The
city’s offices are located in the Hall of Waters, an Art Deco masterpiece
l The city leadership pursues strategic growth initiatives, the population has grown from 10,000 in 2000 to an estimated 11,800 in 2005. Public services are state of the art. The area offers numerous parks, historic sites, and an eclectic mix of shops, services, restaurants, businesses, a dinner theater, and cultural opportunities. Excelsior Springs’ progressive public education system is accredited with distinction, offering high teacher-to-student ratios. Since 2000, the district has completed a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, a new Area Career Center, updated Elementary facilities and a newly remodeled Early Childhood Center.
Curriculums include a complete program of studies for the high school and college prep with extensive offerings in Art, Music, Drama, and Dual Credit opportunities. The district also offers comprehensive athletic and activities programs. The community’s rich sports heritage continues with a new tennis complex, a city owned 90-year-old 18 hole golf course, extensive baseball & basketball facilities and a city skateboard park. The newly completed Tiger Stadium is home to the NCAA Division II Mineral Water Bowl.
